Can I write a check from one bank account and deposit it into another?

I have two separate checking accounts with two different banks. I currently live in a state where one of my banks is not available, but the account is still active and I still receive direct deposit in it from work. Now, my question is simple really, can I write a check from bank account A and deposit it in bank account B....in other words can I write the check out to my name, sign it and use the ATM to make a deposit...is this legit? Or will I get hit with penalties?

penalties??? why would you get penalties.

as long as the funds you are writing the check on are available, you are fine to do that. thats an extremely common thing to do.

i would advise you to go into the branch rather than the atm, because most ATMs place 2 day holds on the funds (or more, depending on the amount), and this can cause you problems. in the branch you will know right away if they will place a hold or not.
Reply:yes it is perfectly legal... as long as you aren't switching the checks to avoid fees (i.e. money not there) that is check kiting and you can get charged with fraud for it.... but as long as the money is there, and you aren't switching back and forth... no problem at all!!!
Reply:You can do it. Just run it as a deposit.
Reply:yes you can without any fear
Reply:yes you can it takes a day longer to clear, but yes there is no problem doing it
Reply:Yes, thats fine.
Reply:fine as wine just do it
