I *purchased* a $1000 money order at Wal-mart last week because I thought I was going to need to send it to someone. Turns out I don't need to send it. Can I deposit it into my bank account, just as I would a check?

Yes. You just make it out to yourself. If you or Wal-mart have already filled it in. Then sign the back and write on it not for intended purposes. Make sure to have your ID so you can prove it was you who bought it.
